The National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union (NEHAWU) will march to the Gauteng Department of Health on Friday to call for the improvement of the province's healthcare system.

The union said it will be handing over a memorandum of demands to MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, calling for her to urgently intervene.

NEHAWU said maladministration, dilapidated infrastructure, and other challenges continue to badly affect healthcare workers and communities.

As the union marks its provincial day of action, its attention is firmly set on the Department of Health, urging it to respond to long-standing concerns.

NEHAWU said the recent revelations of corruption at Tembisa Hospital, one of the facilities plagued by serious challenges, underscore the depth of the crisis.

Earlier this week, the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) released a report showing that billions of rands were looted from the struggling facility through irregular tender awards.

The union said the findings confirm the department’s failure to deal with systemic problems in the province.
