He explained that the event hosted in the city aims to mobilise all tourism practitioners, from township-based entrepreneurs to hotel owners and tour guides, to collaborate in developing a more impactful tourism sector.
Central to Ekurhuleni’s strategy is the Aerotropolis Master Plan, which aims to utilise OR Tambo International Airport as a hub for economic activity. “Over 21 million people travel through the airport every year, but most only spend one night here,” said Xhakaza. “We want to change that by developing attractions, restaurants, museums, and heritage sites that encourage visitors to explore and stay longer.”
To achieve this, the city aims to formalise partnerships with the private sector, offering businesses opportunities to manage and maintain key tourism sites such as Gillooly’s Farm and Germiston Lake. “Government must ensure infrastructure, safety, and services, but the private sector can help us keep these sites active, vibrant, and well-maintained,” he noted.
Ultimately, Xhakaza believes that cooperation between the public and private sectors will unlock Ekurhuleni’s tourism potential and secure the city’s economic sustainability.
