The Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) said they were shocked by Chief Magistrate Vusimuzi Mahlangu’s decision to recuse himself in the fraud and corruption matter against Crime Intelligence boss Dumisani Khumalo.

On Tuesday, Mahlangu recused himself from the matter, citing allegations made against the judiciary before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.

Khumalo, Precious Madondo, the head of Crime Intelligence's analysis centre, and Josias Lekalakala, Gauteng Crime Intelligence head, appeared before the Pretoria Regional Court on Wednesday morning.

The trio are charged with fraud and corruption related to the appointment of 30-year-old Dineo Mokwele to an executive position within Crime Intelligence, despite her not having any previous policing experience.

They want their bail conditions amended so they can return to work but were unsuccessful following Mahlangu recusing himself from presiding over their case on Tuesday.

While the trio appeared before a new magistrate, the outcome was not what they wanted.

This, as the IDAC, who are leading the case, made an application to take Mahlangu’s recusal on review in the high court.

The matter was adjourned to allow the high court process to be concluded before the trio’s bail amendments can be addressed.
