Scientists at the Oregon Health and Science University have created an early-stage human embryo using DNA extracted skin cells fertilised with sperm.

Embryologist Stacey Wilson explains that the process works by removing the nucleus from a donor egg and replace it with the nucleus of the skin cell.

“The skin cell and the egg cell both contain a nucleus which contains our genetic makeup,” she continues.

This discovery could help individuals without viable eggs or sperm have genetically related children.

It could even potentially allow for male same-sex couples to have children biologically related to both parents.

The technology, known as in vitro gametogenesis (IVG), is still at the experimental stage, but experts believe it could reach clinical trials within the 10 years.
