23 October 2025 | 7:26Philip Kgosana Drive is closed as cars rev up for the show. The Speed Classic Cape Town 2025 brings motorsport to the city streets for a weekend of speed, sound, and heritage on Saturday and Sunday.
The twists and turns of the iconic Philip Kgosana Drive will come alive with the roar of racing machines and timeless classics.
"Speed Classic Cape Town is a magnificent mountain climb overlooking the city, the mountain, and the ocean," says entrepreneur Iain Banner. "It's a safe environment for people to drive as fast as they can with cars going every 30 seconds."
Cars and drivers participating on the day have been assessed before taking to the streets, Banner added.
What to expect on Saturday, 25 October:
Motoring heritage takes centre stage as 70 classic cars, including some of the rarest vehicles on earth, take to the tarmac. Some of the standout cars in action include:
• Stuart Mackay-Davidson: 1980 Ferrari 308 GTB, one of only five in South Africa.
• Harry Tayler: 1930 Bentley 4.5L Le Mans, the sole known example in the country.
• Charles Arton: 1979 March 79A, a bespoke-built race car for Formula Atlantic in South Africa.
The driver line-up adds further excitement. South African racer Franco Scribante will pilot a 1970 Chevron B19, a rare prototype with only around 30 ever built.
Franco will be joined by Silvio Scribante, who will be behind the wheel of a 1970s Ford Capri Perana. International entries include Swiss drivers Serge Endress in a 1965 Lola T70 Spyder, one of fewer than 50 worldwide, and Matthias Annefield in a 1971 Ford Capri Perana, a rare factory-supported muscle car unique to South Africa, born from Basil Green's genius engineering in collaboration with Ford. While 500 were originally made, only around 100 cars still exist.
What to expect on Sunday, 26 October:
Supercars and speed machines will battle it out in the King of the Mountain showdown.
Some highlights include:
• Farouk Dangor: Ferrari SF90 Stradale – one of only 11 registered in the country, and one of the fastest road-legal Ferraris ever built, going 0-100kph in 2.5 seconds.
• Greg Parton: Lamborghini Aventador. One of the fastest naturally aspirated V12 road cars ever built. Only a handful of variants in the country.
• Pieter Zeelie: Toyota MR2 Super GT. Simola 2025 King of the Hill Champion
• Dawie Joubert: Lotus Exige powered by a twin-turbo Ferrari V8 engine. Simola 2024 King of the Hill Champion.
• Franco Scribante: Nissan GTR35, known as 'The Sheriff', with over 1500hp. Simola 2023 King of the Hill Champion.
• Marcel Angel: Ferrari 488 GT3. The car has raced overseas in European championships, and Marcel is a multiple SA champion.
• Byron Mitchell: Reynard Formula VW. It was the official German F3 car in 2001. Byron won the Simola 2025 King of the Hill title in single-seaters and sports cars.
• Connor Kilbride: Ligier JS53-Evo 2. A fast and nimble prototype weighing only 570kg. An exciting car which has never been documented to compete in a SA Hillclimb event, making this the first one to do so.
