The City of Ekurhuleni has officially appointed Kagiso Lerutla as its new city manager.

Lerutla is a chartered accountant who previously served as the metro's chief financial officer.

He succeeds Imogen Mashazi, the city's first female city manager, who retired earlier this year after nearly three decades of service to Ekurhuleni.

The City of Ekurhuleni’s newly appointed city manager, Kagiso Lerutla, has had a turbulent journey during his time as the city’s chief financial officer.

In 2023, he narrowly escaped an apparent assassination attempt when unknown gunmen riddled his car with bullets.

While it remains unclear whether the attack was linked to his work, it came amid growing concerns about corruption. Just earlier this year, another city auditor was killed after probing irregular contracts.

The city said that Lerutla’s tenure as chief financial officer saw Ekurhuleni achieve three consecutive clean audits.

The city added that he brings 13 years of experience in public finance and governance management.
