Reiger Park residents accuse families of shielding perpetrators of deadly drive-by shootings

Residents of Reiger Park, Ekurhuleni, have publicly accused the families of those responsible for a drive-by shooting that claimed six lives this past weekend of protecting the criminals.

They allege the suspects, who are reportedly well-known in the community, were seen by witnesses during the shooting on Saturday but have yet to be arrested. Three other people were injured in the attack.

On Monday, residents turned out in large numbers as Ekurhuleni's acting mayor, Jongizizwe Dlabathi, and other city officials visited the affected families. The residents maintain that the perpetrators are currently living among them.

"Everyone knows who it is, but they are scared to talk. As a parent, you know your son, but at the end of the day, you still hide your child, which is very wrong. I mean, look at the lives we’ve lost because of mothers hiding their kids," one resident said.
