Five members of the same family have died in a shack fire in the City of Ekurhuleni.

Emergency services were called to the scene at the Steve Biko informal settlement just before midnight.

One teenager survived the blaze.

Ekurhuleni disaster and emergency services spokesperson William Ntladi said the cause of the fire is being investigated.

"The scene is handed over to South Africa Police Services officers for rehabilitation and removal of the deceased to appropriate pathological facilities," reads the city’s statement.

"The primary responding team found a five roomed shack (three bedrooms, kitchen, and dining room) engulfed by flames with entrapment on their arrival."
