Rangers working at the Kruger National Park have been celebrated for being real life heroes.
Four of the park’s rangers have been honoured for managing to save themselves and protect others from being attacked and possibly killed.
The park said the bravery award is recognition for single-handedly confronting dangerous wild animals and poachers.
The Kruger National Park has offered high praise to one of its bravest rangers.
It said Albert Mkansi contributed to many successful anti-poaching operations, but his most notable achievements were surviving two wildlife attacks.
He narrowly escaped a leopard and a hippo attack in 2024.
According to the park management, despite bleeding, Mkansi remained calm and fired three shots at the hippo before it retreated to the water.
Kruger National Park spokesperson Rey Thakuli said he sustained severe injuries both hands and his left foot, which was amputated.
"The bravery award, also known as the Kruger Cross, is the highest in the Kruger National Park and is awarded to a candidate who has performed and act exceptionally brave to save a colleague, tourist or any person's or animal's life. "
Despite his foot being amputated, Mkansi is a ranger; however, his role has been slightly adjusted.
