Two student accommodation buildings funded by NSFAS in Johannesburg's inner city have been disconnected for owing a combined R12.4 million in unpaid electricity bills.
The disconnections are part of the city's ongoing mayoral CEO Clean-Up Campaign in Region F, which includes the inner city and Braamfontein.
The campaign, led by City Power, targets defaulting customers and illegal electricity connections in an effort to recover billions owed to the city.
The power utility said that the two accommodations on Lilian Ngoyi Street belonged to the same account holder, who has allegedly been receiving NSFAS payments but failing to settle municipal accounts.
Spokesperson Isaac Mangena: "This is not the first time we disconnected one of these student accommodation flats, over the same issue but there was an agreement, acknowledgement of debt agreement, that was signed with the owner but that has since fallen off because of the defaulting that happened along the way."
