The City of Johannesburg will provide an update on Tuesday morning on the two-week process it undertook to verify and register informal traders in the CBD.
Earlier in November, the Johannesburg High Court ordered the city to formalise and allocate trading stalls to more than 500 street vendors by Tuesday.

The ruling followed a case brought by the Socio-Economic Rights Institute of South Africa (SERI), which argued the city had infringed on the traders’ rights to earn a living.
This legal action came after the city’s cleanup campaign, during which illegal informal traders operating outside designated trading zones were removed.
Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero said many additional people have now expressed interest in becoming new informal traders in the CBD.
“We have now received news applications, and the number is about 1,500 of people who want to trade in the inner city. So, we will be looking at innovative ways to ensure they can trade in proper designated areas and so that they can stop avoiding them pavements.”
