The City of Joburg has confirmed the death of former Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) head David Tembe.
It’s understood that he had complained about not feeling well to colleagues on Friday and was working from home.
Tembe was working as a special advisor to the MMC for Public Safety in the city at the time of his death.
His cause of death is yet to be determined.
EWN understands that Tembe died on Friday, as he was found in the same clothing when he was discovered on Monday.
According to well-placed sources, Tembe’s domestic worker left his home on Friday afternoon, with Tembe locking up after she had left.
When arriving at his home on Monday, his helper could not gain access and alerted authorities.
Emergency services managed to enter the home, where they found Tembe unresponsive.
He was found with his house keys in his hand and still wearing a robe he had been clothed in on Friday.
Tembe was taken to a state mortuary, and his family was only notified on Tuesday morning.
He was appointed JMPD chief in 2017, and later served as MMC for Public Safety from 2021 to 2023.
Most recently, he worked as a strategic advisor to the current MMC for Public Safety, Mgcini Tshwaku.
