The South African Weather Service (SAWS) said that KwaZulu-Natal residents should brace for a wet festive season, with a significant amount of rainfall forecasted for the province.

In the last week, parts of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), including Ulundi and New Hanover, have been ravaged by heavy downpours, resulting in localised flooding in several areas.

Three lives have been lost in New Hanover alone, while hundreds of homes have been destroyed.

As parts of KZN continue to experience rainfall and thunderstorms, the weather service said that there is no end in sight just yet.

It’s explained that the province is a summer rainfall region, which means the wet conditions come as no surprise.

“Even with the upcoming days, we are expecting some isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers. Those isolated showers and thundershowers have a possibility of becoming severe in some places,” said weather forecaster Thandiwe Gumede.

Gumede said that the harsh conditions are expected to persist for months.
