The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has been placed under administration once again following another period of instability and governance concerns.
This effectively means the student financial aid scheme's board has been dissolved and the entity will temporarily be run by an administrator.
This follows the recent resignation of two board members, including acting chairperson Mugwena Maluleke.
Maluleke resigned just five months after his appointment, having replaced another chairperson who also stepped down.
Speaking at a media briefing in Pretoria on Monday, Higher Education Minister Buti Manamela said the decision was taken to stabilise NSFAS.
"Governance instability within the board itself intensified. There were increasing disputes around governance processes, executive appointment processes and broader governance matters. The issue before government became much better broader than the narrow question of whether the board could technically convene meetings."
