The eThekwini municipality has closed four of its busy beaches following the detection of pollution.
The Blue Lagoon, eThekwini, Country Club, and Battery beaches, all situated in the central parts of Durban, have been affected.
In a statement, the metro said investigations are underway to trace the source of the pollution and implement mitigation processes.

This latest closure comes a day after a damning court judgment found the municipality failed in its obligation to prevent sewage spills from leaking into its rivers and the ocean, causing severe environmental damage.
"Pending further testing and investigation, the four beaches will remain closed to safeguard public health and safety," reads the statement.
"Holidaymakers are reminded that 19 other bathing beaches remain open, all monitored by lifeguards and supported by a 2,000-strong metro police contingent, working in collaboration with the South African Police Service to ensure a safe and enjoyable festive season."
