Donovan Moodley, the man convicted of the 2004 abduction and murder of 21-year-old university student Leigh Matthews, has been denied parole.
Despite a recommendation for release by the parole board in September, the final decision has confirmed that Moodley will remain behind bars. Moodley had approached the board earlier this year, citing his eligibility to apply for placement on parole under South African law.
BACKGROUND OF THE CASE
Moodley’s conviction dates back to a case that gripped the nation two decades ago.
2004: Leigh Matthews was abducted from her university campus and subsequently murdered.
2005: Moodley was sentenced to life imprisonment for his crimes.
2024: After serving nearly 20 years, Moodley sought release, leading to the recent board hearings.
The decision to deny parole follows years of consistent opposition from the Matthews family, who have frequently advocated for Moodley to remain incarcerated for the duration of his life sentence.
