The Madlanga Commission has revealed that top cop Richard Shibiri purchased Gucci and Louis Vuitton shoes, a few months after receiving a payment from alleged crime boss, Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala.

Shibiri has maintained that the R70,000 payment was a loan to fix his son’s damaged cars.

He said he didn’t have enough money to pay for the repairs despite his bank records showing he and his son had over R100,000 at the time.

The suspended head of organised crime at the South African Police Service (SAPS) continued to face grilling over the supposed “loan” he received from Matlala.

Shibiri told the commission he was in financial difficulty at the time and was forced to sell his cattle to reimburse Matlala.

However, bank records show a few months after receiving the money, Shibiri bought R19, 000 sneakers at Gucci and R3,000 sandals at Louis Vuitton in Sandton.

Shibiri said: “I decided I wanted to use the money to build something (a wall at his house), I thought I must not use the money, which will be loaned to me. I’ll use it and pay it in December.”

Co-commissioner Sandile Khumalo said: “But that (still) doesn’t explain the Gucci and LV purchases because it shows you had money for those things.”

Shibiri said the Gucci sneakers were a gift for a friend who bought him a Zegna suit the previous year.

He said he got the Louis Vuitton sandals after exchanging a wallet he got as a birthday gift and paid the R3,000 difference.
