The eThekwini Municipality released these mid-season festive statistics on Monday, highlighting a successful safety strategy during one of the busiest periods in recent years.

eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba noted that the city’s lifeguards have been under significant pressure due to the high volume of bathers. A particular peak occurred on December 16, which saw an influx of over 200,000 visitors in a single day.
“Making it the busiest day in recent history,” said Mayor Xaba. “Despite these unprecedented crowds, the city is proud to report zero drownings and no major incidents on the day. This achievement reflects the dedication and professionalism of our staff, including lifeguards, emergency disaster teams, as well as law enforcement.”
The success of the season thus far is attributed to the coordinated presence of municipal staff. While the high visitor numbers—nearly 900,000 in just three weeks—present logistical challenges, the city's disaster management and law enforcement teams remain on high alert as the festive season continues.
