Search and rescue teams in KwaZulu-Natal have recovered the bodies of two people in Amanzimtoti, south of Durban, following heavy downpours in the region.

Rescue operations began after three men were reported missing when their vehicle was swept away by a river during Sunday’s storms. Police divers and emergency personnel focused their search efforts near the site where the vehicle's wreckage was first discovered.

The discovery of these two victims brings the confirmed death toll from the recent flooding to three. Earlier this week, a mudslide in Margate on the KZN South Coast claimed the life of one person.

ALS Paramedics spokesperson, Garrith Jamieson, confirmed that the first recovery was made early in the operation.

“The first body was believed to be that of the driver, a male of about 25 years of age — he has been declared deceased by Advanced Life Support Paramedics,” Jamieson stated.

Shortly after the first recovery, teams located another victim. Jamieson confirmed that the operation is ongoing as personnel work to reach the remaining missing individual.

“A second body has been found and search and rescue are getting ready to go down to recover the body,” he said.
