More than 12-million cattle are set to be vaccinated against foot-and mouth-disease throughout the country this year.
Farms in at least six provinces were forced to place cattle under quarantine after the disease detected.
Economist Wandile Sihlobo said that there’s light at the end of the tunnel in the beef sector following a spike in beef prices due to the current outbreak.
He said that while the disease is still a challenge, slaughtering will return at a robust pace as the vaccinations rollout.
"Now you have feedlots keeping cattle for a much longer period than they would, which means they're now bigger stakes, reasonably fatter, others than usual. And I think that all of that will actually add downward pressure on prices.”
