Cape Town metro police have arrested five suspects after uncovering an illegal liquor plant in Durbanville.

After receiving a tip-off, neighbourhood safety officers were permitted to enter the premises and discovered eleven large drums of home-made gin.

The suspects were allegedly packaging the brew into bottles of two popular alcohol brands, with the intention to sell them as genuine products.

MAYCO member for safety and security, JP Smith says three men and two women, aged between 18 and 39, face charges under the Counterfeit Goods Act and for the possession of presumed stolen property.

"Counterfeit alcohol is extremely dangerous and often contain toxic substances which can lead to severe health issues and even death," Smith added.
