World record swimmer Howard Warrington braved icy sea waters on Tuesday to attempt the False Bay crossing in order to raise funds for the Cape of Good Hope SPCA.
Although Warrington failed to complete the 33-kilometre swim across False Bay from Miller’s Point to Rooi Els, he managed to raise close to R65 000.
After seven hours in the water, Warrington had covered 22 kilometres with his swim, but with cramping steadily increasing and conditions worsening, he made the decision to end the swim.
SPCA spokesperson Belinda Abraham says the funding raised will enable a mass animal sterilisation programme in an underserved community.
"Howard Warrington plunged into False Bay at Miller's Point with extraordinary courage. He didn't reach the Rooiels shore, but he did reach an entire community in need instead," Abraham said.
Warrington says he will be back to take on the challenge again.
