DA considers swearing in Zille as Johannesburg PR councillor

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Johannesburg is strongly considering having Helen Zille sworn in as one of its PR councillor's in the Johannesburg municipality.

The 74-year-old politician is the DA's mayoral candidate for Joburg in the upcoming local government elections.

While Zille’s political career has largely been focused on the Western Cape, she was born and raised in Johannesburg.

With local government elections expected to take place this year, Zille is set to ramp up her mayoral campaign.

Last year, she said that she was in the process of moving from Cape Town to Johannesburg.

DA's Johannesburg Chairperson, Wendy Alexander, said that the party is in the process of updating its councillor list.

“And then, should a vacancy arise, we would then discuss what would be strategically advantageous because there are pros and cons to all with Helen being part of the council or not. So we haven’t made a decision either way, but we are making sure we have options available to us.”

The DA is hoping that there will be a vacancy soon on its PR list as one of its current ouncillor's, Bea Campbell Cloete, will be contesting in Ward 102’s by-election.
