The uMkhanyakude eSikhawini Magistrate's Court has heard testimony revealing that one of two businessmen, killed over alleged tender disputes, received death threats just days before his murder.
Three men linked to the killings returned to court on Thursday, facing a string of charges. These include two counts of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, three counts of attempted murder, and charges related to the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
A PROBE INTO DISTRICT VIOLENCE
The murders of businesspeople in the uMkhanyakude District gained national attention in 2022, leading to the assignment of the Political Killings Task Team to probe the cases.
A year later, investigators arrested Elijah Mkhwanazi, leader of a local business forum, along with his co-accused, Mandlenkosi Khuzwayo-Khanyile and Thokozani Ngubane.
EVIDENCE OF INTIMIDATION
As the trial proceeded today, the State began leading evidence from witnesses. The court heard that Mkhwanazi allegedly threatened both of the deceased during a public meeting held only three days before they were shot and killed.
A State witness, who cannot be named for security reasons, testified that he was present during the meeting. He told the court that the main accused issued a chilling warning to those in attendance:
"Those who oppose will be buried."
THE FATAL ATTACKS
The court was presented with the grim details of the two separate attacks:
Thelumusa Mahlaba was shot and killed inside his home while watching television.
Siyabonga Mthiyane was lured to a meeting at a local garage, where he was subsequently shot and killed.
The matter has been adjourned until tomorrow, when the next State witness is expected to take the stand.
