Residents of the Site 5 informal settlement in Du Noon are demanding urgent answers from the government over emergency rebuilding material, which they say is long overdue.

This comes exactly a week after a devastating fire tore through the community, destroying more than 600 shacks and leaving an estimated 2 600 people homeless and destitute.

Affected residents say they are desperate to rebuild their lives and cannot afford to wait any longer, especially with cold and wet weather conditions worsening their situation.

Community leaders say that while food parcels and temporary assistance are being provided, there's been little clarity on when building materials such as wood, zinc, and tools will be delivered.

The National Human Settlements Department, however, says the procurement of emergency material is at an advanced stage and will be rolled out as soon as the process is completed.

Community leader Zukiswa Kobe says residents want immediate action and are complaining that delays are prolonging their suffering.

"Also, there are some people who are next to the MyCity depot that the City of Cape Town told not to build their shacks yet, and that they must wait for 30 days. So, they don't know where they're going to stay for 30 days."

Relief efforts are underway, but the scale of the disaster has overwhelmed the community.
