Shiko Mokaila first fell in love with netball’s speed and strategy as a schoolboy. Now, after a distinguished 15-year playing career, he has been appointed head coach of the South Africa Men’s National Netball team.
“I'm absolutely thrilled and humbled to be appointed,” Mokaila told Eyewitness News. “It's a huge responsibility, but I'm ready for the challenge. I've had the privilege of working with some amazing coaches and players throughout my career, and I'm excited to bring my experience and passion to this role.”

A NEW VISION FOR THE TEAM
Mokaila, who succeeds Jabulani Vilane, emphasised that his coaching philosophy centres on the well-being of his athletes. He plans to implement a more dynamic approach to the game while fostering a supportive environment.
“I'd like to focus on developing a stronger team culture, where every player feels valued and supported. I'm also keen to improve our fitness and skills... I'd love to see us playing a more expansive, attacking style of netball that showcases our skills and creativity.”
His first assignment at the helm will be leading the national side against the Australian Kelpies in a three-match curtain-raiser series. The series will take place during the SPAR Challenge at the Ellis Park Indoor Arena, alongside the SPAR Proteas’ clash with the Vitality Roses.
The appointment comes at a high point for the squad, who are fresh from winning the Africa Cup in Lilongwe last month.

ADVOCATING FOR THE SPORT
Despite the team's recent success, Mokaila believes there is a significant gap in how the men’s game is perceived and supported.
“Unfortunately, I don't think men's netball gets the attention it deserves,” he noted. “We need more media coverage and marketing to raise the profile of the sport. I'd love to see more games broadcast on TV and social media, and more stories about our players and their journeys.”
A LEGACY OF LEADERSHIP
Mokaila’s transition to coaching follows a storied career on the court. He retired from professional play in 2023 after the Africa Netball Cup in Botswana. As captain, he led South Africa to two African Netball Championship titles and a runner-up finish at the Americas Championships.
Mokaila will be assisted in his new role by Siyabonga Khuzwayo.
Reflecting on his journey, Mokaila credits his longevity to the lessons learned on the court: “I've learned the importance of hard work, teamwork, and resilience. You've got to believe in yourself and your teammates, even when things get tough.”

LOOKING TO THE GRASSROOTS
For Mokaila, the future of South African netball depends on early intervention and structural support. He is calling for a renewed focus on the “boy child” in local communities.
“I'd like to see more investment in grassroots programs and coaching development,” he told Eyewitness News. “We need to grow the sport from the ground up, introducing the boy child to netball in schools and communities. We also need to support our coaches and officials, providing them with the resources and training they need to succeed.”
