The Parliamentary Ad Hoc Committee probing police corruption is preparing for its next round of witnesses, amid concerns regarding security and a lack of legal representation for certain participants.

This week, the committee heard testimony from former Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) head Robert McBride, as well as suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police Chief Julius Mkhwanazi.

These testimonies form part of a broader investigation that has already processed evidence from 14 witnesses, 11 of whom appeared during the first phase ending in November last year.

The inquiry is now preparing to hear from forensic investigator Paul O’Sullivan and various civil society members next week.

Evidence leader Advocate Norman Arendse confirmed that alleged ANC fixer Brown Mogotsi is scheduled to appear early next month, though his appearance has been complicated by logistical hurdles.

"Then we have Brown Mogotsi, who we have now scheduled to consult with on Wednesday after earlier he raised issues both about not having legal representation and also some security concerns," Arendse stated.

To conclude the oral evidence phase, KZN Provincial Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi will return to the stand. His role will be to address the various claims made throughout the proceedings.

"We conclude with Lt. General Mkhwanazi to do a ‘sweep’ of allegations that have emerged during the course of the hearings thus far," Arendse explained.

The committee is expected to conclude its inquiry on February 20, after which a draft report will be submitted for review.
