ANC’s Dora Mlambo elected Speaker of Ekurhuleni City Council

 The African National Congress’s Dora Mlambo has been elected Speaker of the Ekurhuleni City Council.
 
Mlambo replaces the Economic Freedom Fighters’ (EFF) Nthabiseng Tshivhenga, who resigned as a councillor in the city last month.

Tshivhenga stepped down following a fallout with fellow EFF councillors and was redeployed to the Gauteng legislature.
  
The ANC’s Dora Mlambo has been elected speaker of the Ekurhuleni City Council after defeating the EFF's Nkululeko Dunga and the DA’s Lucky Dinake.
 
Mlambo won with 91 votes.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) and EFF's candidates received 69 and 31 votes, respectively.
 
ANC regional deputy secretary, Moipone Mhlongo, says the party is pleased to have finally secured the speaker’s seat.
 
"We take this as a vote of confidence in the ANC from councillors of Ekurhuleni, where the DA and EFF fielded their candidates, but the ANC emerged victorious.
 
It's understood the ANC is also set to make changes to the mayor's doctor Xhakaza Mayoral Committee, which includes EFF and AIC councillors.
