The City of Cape Town on Monday said its law enforcement agencies made 404 arrests in the past week, bringing the total for January to 1,358.

City Mayoral Committee (Mayco) member for safety and security, JP Smith, said Metro Police officers made 146 arrests, including 22 for driving under the influence.

He added that officers issued close to 4,000 traffic and by-law fines during patrols last week.

Smith said law enforcement officers made 176 arrests and issued more than 11,000 fines.

Meanwhile, traffic officers made 62 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol, recording more than 80,000 offences.

"Road accidents also saw a notable uptick for the first time in several weeks. I really do wish more people could start connecting the dots and see how improved personal accountability and better decision-making can ease the load on enforcement and emergency services, and also improve public safety," Smith said.
