The City of Johannesburg Social Housing Company, Acting CEO Themba Mathibe, has been released from custody on R50 000 bail.

Mathibe made a brief appearance in the Alexandra Magistrates Court on Wednesday on money laundering charges.

The 28-year-old was arrested on Monday after law enforcement authorities raided the municipal entity’s offices in Braamfontein.

Sources in the municipality confirmed that heavily armed police officers raided the offices on Monday, and several senior officials were questioned over alleged irregular contracts.

Following the raid, Mathibe sent an internal message to staff, apologising for the fear and disruption caused by the police operation.

Mathibe, who is facing money-laundering charges, was arrested after a substantial amount of cash was allegedly found at his home.

Police have confirmed they are investigating allegations of procurement irregularities involving Mathibe.

Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe explained: “The SAPS [South African Police Service] Cold Case Unit and Special Task Force effected an arrest on a charge of money laundering after the CEO was found with a substantial amount of money at his home.

“The team was acting on a J51 search and seizure warrant where the accused's home and offices were raided. The accused has already appeared before the Alexandra Magistrates Court and has been granted R50, 000 bail.”

His case has been postponed to 2 February for further investigation.
