Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has announced that the City has allocated R114 million to improve safety measures on a notorious stretch of the N2.

The N2 Edge project is aimed at improving safety for commuters, pedestrians, and communities along a 9km stretch of the highway near the airport.

It includes the construction of a wall or 'security barrier' which Hill-Lewis says "will make a significant positive difference to the safety of every motorist along that stretch, and the reduction of pedestrian fatalities".

Responding to some controversy around this, the Mayor pointed out that the N2 already has a security barrier, but because this is completely dilapidated it needs to be replaced.

This project is an important part of the broader plan to improve safety along the N2 in the vicinity of Cape Town International, he said.

Aside from safety barrier repairs and embankment reinforcements, it will also bring various safety improvements for adjacent communities. These include new pedestrian crossings, improved lighting and safety barriers for recreational spaces.

In a video posted on social media, Hill-Lewis thanked the ratepayers of Cape Town for making this investment in safety on the N2 possible.

He also highlighted the deployment of 44 new law enforcement officers.

"Thousands of residents from Mitchells Plain, Khayelitsha, Blue Downs, Eerste River, Mfuleni, Somerset West and from the whole Helderberg use this highway daily. We are working for their safety!"
