More charges have been brought against the teenager accused of being involved in the recent mass shooting in Philippi East in Cape Town.
Bheki Manxiwa is facing nine counts of murder, one of attempted murder, and two of robbery with aggravating circumstances.
During his brief appearance in the Athlone Magistrate's court on Monday, the state added charges under the Prevention Organised Crime Act (POCA).
The prosecution has told the court that the POCA charges were brought against Manxiwa after investigations revealed that he's part of an extortion syndicate - operating in Philippi East.
Police believe the murder of nine people at a tavern in Marikana informal settlement was an extortion hit.
"Because he's part of a gang that are fighting over extortion in the area. He belongs to a gang called 2C, who are also in a fight with another gang in the Marcus Garvey area, explained National Prosecuting Authority's Eric Ntabazalila.
The case has been postponed to 16 April for further investigation.
Police have also launched a manhunt for two more suspects linked to the attack.
