Motorists will breathe a sigh of relief at the pumps this week, as the cost of fuel lowers.

Both grades of petrol will cost 65 cents less per litre, while diesel will drop by between 50 and 57 cents per litre.

This marks a second consecutive drop in some prices following the January adjustment.

The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources announced the latest changes in a statement on Monday.

The department's Robert Maake said the adjustments take effect from Wednesday.

"Both grades of petrol will decrease by 65 cents a litre. Diesel will decrease by 50 and 57 cents a litre. Illuminating paraffin at retail level will decrease by 70 cents a litre. And LP gas will increase by 31 cents countrywide and by 36 cents in Western Cape."

Maake said a stronger Rand against the US Dollar helped to cushion the fuel prices.

"The average international product prices decreased due to availability of inventory. This is despite the fact that the crude oil prices increased on average during the same period."
