Controversial North West businessman Suliman Carim has approached the High Court on an urgent basis to interdict his appearance before the Madlanga Commission.
Carim is seeking to challenge how he has been categorised by the inquiry, arguing that the Commission cannot refer to him as an implicated person. He is requesting that this designation be reviewed and set aside.
This legal action follows testimony from KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi during a July 6 briefing. Mkhwanazi identified Carim as a businessman who has been meddling in police affairs.
Further testimony heard at the Commission alleged that Carim used his political links to influence and ensure that Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala, an alleged crime boss, received payments regarding a R360 million police tender.
General Mkhwanazi’s testimony further claims that Matlala communicated with Carim in attempts to destabilise police investigations. Despite these serious allegations, Carim is moving to halt his testimony and will argue his case in the Johannesburg High Court tomorrow.
