Joburg Water says it has increased its efforts to restore the water supply in Midrand and surrounding areas after pumping at its Grand Central reservoir resumed on Thursday morning.
Today, residents entered their eighth day of intermittent water supply. The utility has attributed the crisis to the city’s damaged water infrastructure and leaks at its reservoirs.
On Wednesday, Joburg Water announced that water levels across the system were expected to reach 40%. As of Thursday morning, the Erand and President Park reservoirs were opened and have since been supplying the network.
Joburg Water says that as the systems gradually recover, low-lying areas will receive water first, while high-lying areas will be the last to see supply restored.
System recovery is a gradual process. Residents in elevated areas may experience longer delays as pressure builds within the infrastructure.
