The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry has heard how a senior SAPS official asked suspected crime boss, Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala, to procure the weight loss drug, Ozempic, for her.
Section Head for Quality Management at SAPS, Rachel Matjeng, says she made the request to Matlala since they were in a romantic relationship. Matjeng has taken the witness stand for the second day at the commission.
More details are coming out regarding the relationship between the senior police official and Matlala. A WhatsApp exchange presented before the commission shows Matjeng asking Matlala for Ozempic. At the time, Matlala had a medical company which recently scored a R360-million tender from SAPS.
“Normally you would struggle to get it from the chemist, so they had a chemist that they were buying Ozempic from. I then requested him as a boyfriend: 'Can I have my Ozempic?'” Matjeng explained.
While Ozempic is used for weight loss, it is primarily a drug prescribed to treat diabetes.
Commissioners raised concerns over whether Matjeng was trying to procure it illegally; however, she told the commission she had a prescription.
