The Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Community Safety has raised serious concerns after today's unexpected oversight visit to Olievenhoutbosch Police Station, citing unsafe conditions for the public and police.
The committee found the station has no functioning holding cells, forcing suspects including those accused of violent crimes to be kept at the front desk alongside victims and community members.
Poor infrastructure, overcrowding, poor lighting, and severe resource shortages were also noted, with a permanent police station still unbuilt more than a decade after authorisation.
Committee Chairperson Bandile Masuku elaborates:
“Despite these challenges, the Committee acknowledges that Olievenhoutbosch Police Station does not fall under the Top 40 priority stations in Gauteng, which indicates that some positive work is being done. This is a testament to the dedication and commitment of the men and women in blue who continue to serve the community under extremely difficult conditions.”
