ActionSA has confirmed its Ekurhuleni mayoral candidate, Xolani Khumalo, was present during the fatal shooting of a Nigerian man on Sunday, in what the party describes as an "anti-drug operation".
Police said preliminary investigations indicate that a production company was filming in Linden when members of its security team allegedly opened fire.
Khumalo, who is also a well-known presenter on Moja Love’s drug-busting TV programme Sizok’thola, was at the scene at the time of the shooting.
Authorities have opened a murder case, but no arrests have been made so far.
While ActionSA claims the Nigerian man who was shot in the presence of its Ekurhuleni mayoral candidate was a drug dealer, police have not confirmed this.
In April last year, murder charges against Khumalo were withdrawn following allegations that a suspected drug dealer was killed during the filming of his Sizok’thola.
In a separate matter, Khumalo was recently granted R2,000 bail on charges of assault and pointing a firearm.
The charges stem from an incident last year in which Khumalo and two others allegedly assaulted an adult man during a reported anti-drug operation.
Police spokesperson Tintswalo Sibeko said police are probing the murder of a Nigerian man, who was shot in Khumalo’s presence.
"Preliminary investigation showed that there was a production company filming in the area and that there were shots fired, allegedly by the production team’s security".
She added that the production team went to the police station when a group of people began to protest.
Meanwhile, ActionSA said it will continue to support every lawful measure to confront the "violent resistance of criminals" who believe they are untouchable.
