The Impendle Local Municipality in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands is once again in limbo despite the election of a new mayor and other office barriers last week.
This follows the African National Congress (ANC)’s move to suspend four of its councillors.
The party’s provincial task team said the councillors acted against the mandate of the party in the Impendle caucus.
EWN understands the party’s deployment committee has identified different candidates for some of the council posts.
Following months of instability at the Impendle Local Municipality with no stable elected leadership, non-payment of salaries and financial constraints, denting its poor image, the metro is again in disarray.
Cooperative Governance MEC Thulasizwe Buthelezi gave the council an instruction to re-elect a mayor and fill a few other council positions.
“We have made very firm resolutions to which must be followed up within days, which we believe will bring stability to this municipality. As we know, there has been no mayor here since July 202,5 and that is one of the major reasons why there is instability.”
On Friday, the council elected new leadership, and this was welcomed by the provincial Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs.
However, on Sunday, the ANC announced that it recalled its councillors, including those elected to top posts.
