Lobby group AfriForum said it was not acting on behalf of any implicated members of the apartheid-era police in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) cases commission of inquiry.

The inquiry started its work on Wednesday morning with opening addresses, almost nine months after its establishment.

The commission is investigating allegations of interference to delay the prosecution of TRC-related cases.

AfriForum is representing four witnesses who will testify before the inquiry.

Advocate Gerrie Nel, the head of the group’s private prosecution unit, said: "We hold no brief of anyone who has made themselves guilty of crimes and has not obtained amnesty. We do not act for any implicated member of the former security forces.

"Mr Kriel is the CEO of AfriForum. A non-profit civil rights organisation with approximately 300,000 members. His evidence will focus on the principle of equality before the law with an underlying plea for all parties to close the book of the past."
