The Town Two Clinic in Khayelitsha reopened on Monday after being closed due to security threats.

Mayco Member for Health and Community Services, Francine Higham, says criminal intimidation and extortion had previously disrupted operations at the facility last week.

She says police and law enforcement personnel are now stationed at the clinic, with additional security officers ensuring the safety of staff and patients.

Higham adds that a mobile clinic in Mandela Park provided support to patients who required chronic medication during the closure.

“This is a critical service for that community. Town Two Clinic serves about 5,500 clients per month. And I think it's approximately 300 a day,” said Higham.

Higham adds that CCTV cameras have also been procured.

“Many of our facilities across the city, we've had to implement these types of measures as well as things like bulletproof glass just to make sure that our officials and the patients are safe,” she said.
