NGO Masifundise is calling for the reversal of drastic cuts to small-scale fishing permits, warning that the reduction threatens food security and livelihoods.

The organisation said the move will have a devastating impact on vulnerable coastal communities.

Masifundise’s NobathembA Ndzengu argues that fishing is a cultural lifeline for rural communities and essential for their survival.

"We remain concerned that the outcomes of these appeals may not align with the current allocation levels required for fishers to meet their minimum survival needs, especially in rural areas. It is important that allocation decisions are fair and sufficient to ensure sustainability and security."
