City Power says it has collected over R1-billion in revenue and is aiming to reach R2.9-billion by the end of the financial year in June 2026.
CapeTalk and 702's Many Wiener spoke to Thami Mathiso, City Power's Chief Commercial Officer.
He said City Power had been experiencing financial gaps since 2016 and the board decided at the beginning of the 2025/2026 financial year to implement a turn around strategy to improve revenue collection and reduce costs.
"This is to make sure that the organisation is financially sustainable."
They have regularised and audited 44,000 metres and are also visiting commercial customers to make sure all is in order.
Significantly, City Power took over billing from the City of Johannesburg in July 2025, which has brought benefits, said Mathiso.
One of the remaining difficulties is illegal connections. "So, what we've realised is that in areas where there's illegal connections, there's actually somebody who's selling electricity there. Promising customers connections if the customer pays them. And they charge customers a monthly fee.
"But the difficulty is that kids get electrocuted, communities live in environments which are not safe. And City Power is trying to electrify some of those areas and make sure that there is constant electricity supply.
"So we are working with the police to make sure that after we go, they can then be on the ground to check who is actually reconnecting the customers and then get them arrested."
