The death toll following a building collapse in Ormonde, south of Johannesburg, has risen to nine.

Search-and-rescue teams have now located the third and final body of a missing construction worker.

On Tuesday morning, the bodies of two workers that were trapped under the rubble were recovered.

Parts of the second-floor deck of the structure caved in on Monday, trapping construction workers beneath the concrete material.

Joburg Mayor Dada Morero has on Tuesday confirmed to the that the city had not approved the building plans of the structure and that it had some issues which resulted in the fall.

He said the construction workers have been identified as South African with some Lesotho nationals.

Morero said an inquest docket will be opened with police to fully probe the incident once the cause of the collapse has been established.

Moreover, the city intends to demolish the building and charge the owner accordingly.

Rescuers are currently working to extract the body of the last construction worker trapped under the rubble.

“The building involved is in clear violation of city by laws as the process was not followed in its construction. The city does not have official record of approval and building plans were not submitted for review.”

The Deputy Minister of Labour Jomo Sibiya has arrived on scene and will later brief the media.
