Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) have confimed that the death toll from the Ormonde building collapse has risen to eight on Tuesday morning.

This, after the resupmption of a search-and-rescue mission, involving members of the South African Police Service (SAPS), for three construction workers.

Operations were called off on Monday night when six people were declared dead.

A section of the structure that was still under construction caved in on Monday afternoon.

It's understood that a concrete slab for the second-floor deck had just been completed when it suddenly collapsed.

"Two individuals have been located and teams are currently working to extract them from beneath the concrete slab. One person remains unaccounted for, bringing the total death toll to eight," said Johannesburg EMS spokesperson Xolile Khumalo.
