About 450 adults and an unconfirmed number of children face eviction in Tshwane after the city secured an order in the Pretoria High Court.
The group has been living in a hazardous building near the Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Gezina.
The building has caught fire twice and was declared unsafe for human habitation by the city.
A city's demolition process is currently underway at the compound where the building is located.
In the vicinity are 12 other buildings and several erected shacks.
On Tuesday, the Pretoria High Court heard that the condemned building is a health hazard and a ticking time bomb.
Inside, it’s infested by rodents and has no electricity or running water.
Officials said they want to avoid a possible tragedy similar to the Usindiso building fire in Johannesburg, but residents are not happy.
They say being moved to a site with tents is even worse than their current situation.
They have been given seven days to vacate the building before authorities enforce the order.
