The Pretoria Magistrates Court has sentenced a 47-year-old man to 15 years direct imprisonment for raping a man and attempting to rape another at a shelter in Akasia.

The incidents occurred in the shelter’s bathroom in July and November 2023 while Niel Klein and the two victims were staying at the shelter.

The rape victim reported the incident to a staff member, prompting the second victim to also disclose the earlier attempted rape.

The court also declared Klein unfit to possess a firearm.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said male victims face challenges in reporting sexual offences.

“In court, he pleaded not guilty to the charges; however, the NPA adduced evidence and proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.”
