Bosasa was subject to the Zondo Commission of Inquiry for State Capture in 2019.
The company was awarded government contracts worth over R2 billion, with approximately R76 million paid out in bribes between 2000 and 2016.
Government Spokesperson William Baloyi said that the sentencing of Smith reflects government’s commitment to the fight against corruption.
"Government places ethical governance and the rule of law at the centre of rebuilding a capable and developmental state. No one is above the law and the country's democratic institutions remain resolute in the fight against corruption."
The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU)'s parliamentary coordinator, Matthew Parks, echoed government's sentiments.
"That this has happened to a former parliamentary committee chairperson and member of the ruling party is a powerful affirmation that the rule of law applies to all, especially those entrusted by the public to lead government."
COSATU urged government to provide the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) with more resources to continue prosecuting corruption cases in the country.
