The South African Police Service (SAPS) is joining police organisations around the world in honouring officers who died in the line of duty on the Interpol International Day of Remembrance for Fallen Officers.

Flags flew at half-mast on Saturday, while police vehicles have switched on their blue lights in tribute.

Police said between April 2024 and March 2025, 27 officers were killed while on duty, 19 were shot, 7 died in vehicle accidents, and one was killed by a blunt object.

Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said the Hawks have arrested 263 suspects linked to police killings since 2023.

These arrests have led to 75 life sentences and a combined 2,799 years in prison.

“Policing is one of the few professions on earth where the decision to protect our communities can cost a police officer everything. This International Day of Remembrance is about recommitting ourselves to the values of the Batho Pele principles for which our fallen officers stood for.”
