Three suspected money mules are facing charges of money laundering and fraud related to a R14 million dating website scam.

Asanda Dwesini, Nomphelo Fetman, and Shan Lewis made a brief appearance in the Muizenberg Magistrates Court on Thursday.

They were arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crimes Unit.

Hawks spokesperson Zinzi Hani said the trio allegedly helped launder money stolen from an elderly woman between 2017 and 2018.

Hani said they created a fake dating profile to lure her into a supposed romantic relationship before she was persuaded to transfer money for fabricated expenses.

"It is reported that the alleged lover lured the victim by using flirtatious language, making her believe that they were in a genuine relationship. Once trust was established, he would ask for money, inventing reasons such as failed trips or urgent fines."

Hani said the victim transferred money into various bank accounts shared by the alleged lover.

"The Western Cape provincial head of the Hawks, Major General Mathipa Makgato, sensitised the public to be cautious before involving themselves in questionable transactions. If not certain, they must not do so," Makgato said.

The three accused will remain in custody until their next court appearance on 26 March 2026.
